I know what a pain it is when they come unprepared ALL THE TIME. lol. But, that said, I do make them bring theirs every day. I allow them to go to their lockers to get them if they left them, but whatever they miss while out, they're responsible for. When I allowed the students to keep the notebooks in the classroom, too many grew legs and walked away. Then I'd have students who needed to take them home to study from them, copy notes, etc., and they also never came back. It was just too much of a pain keeping track of the notebooks with five different classes using them. Does that make sense? I hope that helps and please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. :)Cherinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16868694809185986196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-622676344090959834.post-17632777159641055612017-08-17T15:51:35.394-04:002017-08-17T15:51:35.394-04:00I am also a high school Spanish teacher who rarely...I am also a high school Spanish teacher who rarely uses the textbook (except as a guide for grammar and vocab) I love your ideas-they will help drive my creation of notebooks this year sp that everything is in one place.
How do you feel about students leaving their notebooks in the classroom? I am so fed up with students coming unprepared; if they leave them in a basket then they have no excuse (ideally). What do you think? Are high schoolers too old for this sort of hand-holding?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12190632372591103827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-622676344090959834.post-6039655467470344272017-08-08T11:30:55.874-04:002017-08-08T11:30:55.874-04:00Hi! While I loved it and the kids (some) seemed to as well, the whole cutting and gluing aspect in a 40 minute class was just taking up too much time. I even tried to spend one day at the beginning of each chapter setting up the notebooks for the chapter but just felt that didn't work quite right either. So, all I've been doing the past couple of years now is having the students take their notes in the notebook and occasionally glue something in. So, it's not as interactive as I'd once preferred, but the kids do utilize them.

As far as packets go, I am using a very old textbook series that is really outdated, so I have just come up wth various resources over the years and combined them into a packet for each chapter. I've found lots of goodies on Teachers Pay Teachers and have made up some of the work as well. It's nothing special, but it beats the textbook that I only use for structure and pacing now.

I hope that helps. I try to keep the grading of the notebooks as simple as I can because as long as they're keeping up with them (which most do), I feel like that's what I want. So, I just count up the number of notes pages they're supposed to have and count them each as a point if they're completed correctly, a point for numbering/titling pages, and a point for keeping up with the table of contents. I hope that helps. :)Cherinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16868694809185986196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-622676344090959834.post-82600797703243126762017-08-08T09:38:31.964-04:002017-08-08T09:38:31.964-04:00Hi Cherin! I don't do warm-ups every day (every year I say I will, but I never do, lol). So, I just create a page or two in each chapter that we use for warm-ups. You could designate several pages initially in each chapter or you could just do a page and when you run out of room, claim another page as you go...meaning, they wouldn't be chunked all together. It's totally up to you how to do it.

2. My notes are usually done on a PowerPoint or Prezi. So, the students copy and I add to the notebook at the same time or shortly thereafter. Sometimes I give them handouts that have the notes on them that they just add to and they would fold/glue it into the notebook.

We usually take a day to do all the foldables at the start of the chapter and then when it's time for notes, the foldable are already there.

Hope that helps!

CherinCherinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16868694809185986196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-622676344090959834.post-19819209167606153372015-07-10T15:20:13.068-04:002015-07-10T15:20:13.068-04:00One more question I thought of! I just have a few questions.

1) Warm-Ups - I usually have my students complete one each day. I noticed you have warm-ups listed on your Table of Contents...is this something you include in the notebook regularly?

2) Also, for the notes. Are your notes pre-written and the students copy them or do you write them at the same time they do? I am trying to figure out how to structure a lesson, but am a little confused. Do I give notes then we insert the foldables or vice versa.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
